This eerie story, first published in WEIRD TALES in 1927, has been a favorite since I read it in MAGAZINE OF HORROR #18 in 1967. The horror is seen by two of the characters, but not the third, and isn't described except in a way that leaves it entirely to the reader's imagination. What is it that is in that tent?
I also like the setting, Antarctica, and for invoking the legacy of Roald Amundsen (1872-1928), the first explorer to the South Pole. (An outstanding and well-researched nonfiction book on the race to the pole is THE LAST PLACE ON EARTH by Roland Huntford, also available as a DVD of a Masterpiece Theater presentation.)
