Thelwell's Top Dog

Norman Thelwell, a British cartoonist born in 1923, was known for many years for his excellent cartoons of animals, especially horses. He drew for PUNCH for 25 years, but he also published 32 books, which sold over 2 million copies in the UK.

TOP DOG was published in 1964, and like the other animals he drew, he understood the essence of the canine, and its relationship to people.

These cartoons are from the first section of the book, "Choosing Your Dog."

Thelwell died at age 80, in 2004.

  2. Not always easy to find on this side of the pond, but definitely worth looking for.

  3. I picked up a copy of this title from a fundraising table at a recent dog show. It is delightful through and through. I agree, he captures so much about owning dogs so well.

  4. Man, this stuff is ringing some serious bells in my murky old memory files... it's possible I had this book when I was a kid, or someone I knew did--- Amazing!
